Reflection #1
Thoughts on Standard 2.3
There is an overwhelming negative discourse on many social media platforms online. Our students are modeling these behaviors, which can be highly detrimental to their futures in post-secondary education, jobs, and other potential opportunities. Learning how to converse and maneuver in the digital era properly is crucial for reputation, character, and overall employability.
Reflection #2
Relevance to my practice
The majority of my students have multiple social media accounts they utilize daily. It takes up a significant part of their lives. Because of the time-consuming nature of these apps and how the youth communicate through them, there is an essential need to ensure they are using them positively. In addition to fun, social media should also teach learners relevant information so they aren't losing a sense of self and well-being while browsing. For these reasons, I usually create a space for group discussion regarding social media banter and tie it in with the Bill of Rights, 1st amendment on free speech - what is permissible and what is not.
Project #1 Media and Information Literacy Learning Segment Proposal
The Media and Information Literacy Segment Proposal tied directly into the ISTE Citizen standard for educators by giving an overview of how to communicate respectfully on various social networks. By providing real-life sceniros for students, they can mirror situations in their own lives and have a model on ways to respond and react.
